First-Generation and Limited-Income Services

Welcome, First-Generation and Limited-Income Badgers!

First-Generation and Limited-Income Services (FGLI) is your campus hub for connection, support, and success. The department brings together resources and programs to help first-generation and limited-income Badgers thrive at UW–Madison. Whether you’re looking to build community, discover campus opportunities, or learn about services designed for first-generation and limited-income students, this is the place for you.

The unit coordinates efforts across campus and creates spaces for students to connect throughout the academic year and build community through programs for current and future first-gen and limited-income Badgers.

UW–Madison was selected to the FirstGen Forward Network (NASPA) in August 2024.

Who is “first-generation”?

FirstGen Forward defines first-generation students as those whose “parent(s) did not complete a 4-year college or university degree.”

We are thrilled to be starting this initiative in support of our first-gen students. As a first-generation student myself, I recall how difficult it was at times to be learning the ins and outs of college academics and campus life without guidance or experience from my family. I’m excited to work with our campus colleagues to strengthen our offerings and community-building opportunities for first-gen students at UW.
